Australia trade with other countries

Originally Australia's main trading partner was Britain. As the early settlement grew, so did trade. Australia began trading with other countries such as India, Indonesia and China. Today, Australia trades with countries from all over the globe.

During World War II, Australia's trade policies were distorted by the loss of More than 60 per cent of trade was with Britain and other Commonwealth countries. 2 Feb 2017 the Australian economy has suffered substantially less disruption than the economies of the other major commodity exporting countries. 2 Aug 2019 China cutting coal imports from Australia by 25% would equate to by sales to other markets – notably Japan, South Korea and countries in  Free Trade Agreements. Australia has eleven free trade agreements (FTAs) in force, with eighteen countries. Australia has signed FTAs with Indonesia, Hong Kong and Peru and is working towards ratification of these agreements. Australia has ratified PACER Plus, a free trade agreement that includes New Zealand and nine Pacific Island countries. Australia incurred the highest trade deficits with the following countries. Among Australia’s trading partners that cause the greatest negative trade balances, Australian deficits with the United Kingdom (up 163.7%), Switzerland (up 52.8%) and Singapore (up 46.5%) grew at the fastest pace from 2017 to 2018.
