Inland revenue rate for business mileage

On 15 May 2017, the Commissioner of Inland Revenue released the results of her review of the mileage rates for expenditure incurred for the business use of a motor vehicle. The review resulted in an upward adjustment of the mileage rate from 72 cents in 2016 to 73 cents for the year ended 31 March 2017 for petrol and diesel vehicles. Operational Statement 09/01 ("OS") published in the Tax Information Bulletin Volume 21, Number 3 (May 2009) provides the Commissioner's statement of a mileage rate for expenditure incurred for the business use of a motor vehicle. This OS provides that the Commissioner will review mileage rate on a yearly basis. Basically, you can claim over 45p tax-free as a business mileage allowance if you use your own car for a business journey. UK mileage rates can differ, however, HMRC advisory fuel rates state that in most circumstances you can claim business mileage at a rate of 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a year (this is an increase of 5p per mile since April 2011) and then 25p per
